2. Try Canyoning or Coasteering
For outdoor adventure lovers, canyoning and coasteering are thrilling options—even in the rain.
Canyoning takes place in lush green landscapes with clear water, offering a natural playground full of jumps, slides, and rappelling down waterfalls.
Coasteering, on the other hand, explores the island’s rugged coastline with natural platform jumps, swimming, climbing, and exploring sea caves and arches. It’s a hands-on way to experience the ocean’s power and discover São Miguel from a whole new perspective.

3. Relax at Caldeira Velha
How about a thermal bath? Picture a warm, iron-rich waterfall in the middle of a stunning natural setting—perfect for a relaxing soak. These hot springs are heated by volcanic activity and are rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and more, which may offer therapeutic benefits. The site is open daily. Get your ticket here.
4. Explore the Lava Tunnel
A guided tour of Gruta do Carvão is a great rainy-day option. This is the island’s largest lava tunnel, formed between 5,000 and 12,000 years ago. Walking through this underground cave is a fascinating experience for visitors of all ages.
5. Visit the Fort and Military Museum
Built in the mid-16th century to defend the Azores against pirate and privateer attacks, Forte de São Brás played a key role in protecting the population over the centuries—including during World War II.
Locally known as “The Castle,” it’s a gem of Renaissance military architecture and the first example of a fully 360-degree bastioned fort in Portugal—and one of the first in Europe.
6. Visit a Pineapple Plantation
São Miguel Island is the only place in the world where pineapples are grown in greenhouses. Several of these plantations are open to the public and offer a delightful and educational experience. Visiting a pineapple plantation is a great way to learn more about this unique Azorean tradition.
Pineapple plantations open for visits.
7. Rejuvenate Yourself in a Thermal Pool
The perfect temperature — any time of year. It feels amazing in the coolness of winter, the misty rain, or the autumn breeze.
The geothermal spring that feeds the thermal pool at Terra Nostra Garden maintains a temperature between 36°C and 42°C (96°F to 108°F), offering a soothing experience like few places in the world.
Thanks to its high mineral content and consistently warm temperature, a dip in these waters can help relieve muscle and joint pain — making it the ultimate relaxation spot, rain or shine.
8. Visit the Historic Ceramics Fabric
Founded in 1862, the Cerâmica Vieira Factory has been run by the same family for five generations. A visit here offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional production of pottery and hand-painted tiles — a craft that has remained unchanged since the factory’s early days.
You can watch local artisans at work, each piece uniquely decorated according to the artist’s own style and creativity. There’s also an on-site shop where you can purchase one-of-a-kind ceramics to take home as a souvenir.
9. Visit a Local Art Studio in Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is home to a few small, local art studios — just search on Google Maps and you’ll find some interesting options.
One worth visiting is the studio of visual artist Angela Fernandes, whose work is deeply inspired by the natural beauty of the Azores. Her pieces reflect the landscapes, textures, and tones of the islands. More info [here].
We’ve also put together all this information in a downloadable PDF — with maps, photos, videos, and helpful links to make your planning easier.
And don’t forget: bring a waterproof jacket for your trip to the Azores — even in summer!
