The beaches of São Miguel Island are known for their breathtaking natural beauty and stunning coastal scenery. With a variety of rock formations, dark volcanic sand, and crystal-clear waters, São Miguel’s beaches captivate visitors with their untouched charm and relaxing atmosphere.
1. MILÍCIAS
Also known as Praia Grande, this beach is very popular among both tourists and locals during the summer and on warm spring days. It’s located just a 10-minute drive from downtown Ponta Delgada.
Praia das Milícias features dark volcanic sand and relatively calm waters. It’s easily accessible and offers a convenient parking area. Just across the street, you’ll find a few cafés and restaurants—perfect for grabbing a bite or enjoying a drink with an ocean view
2. AREAL DE SANTA BÁRBARA
Areal de Santa Bárbara, located in Ribeira Grande, is one of the largest beaches on the island, with a stretch of sand that extends for about one kilometer.
This is a supervised beach with lifeguards on duty, a large parking area, and restroom facilities available. It’s a favorite spot among surfers, and several surf competitions take place here throughout the year. It’s also a beautiful place to watch the sunset.
3. MOSTEIROS
This dark-sand beach of volcanic origin is known for its magnificent sunsets and the constant presence of the Ilhéus dos Mosteiros (Mosteiros islets) on the horizon. It’s equipped with support facilities such as a parking lot and restrooms.
Like most volcanic beaches, its sand is dark, and the contrast between the black rock, dark sand, and the deep blue sea is stunning—truly a sight to behold.
The waters at Praia dos Mosteiros are warm and crystal-clear. The beach offers easy access, along with parking and restroom facilities.
4. MONTE VERDE
Located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, this beach features a wide stretch of sand. From June to September each year, its facilities are enhanced with the installation of restrooms, changing rooms, and showers.
It’s a popular spot for surfers, bodyboarders, windsurfers, and kitesurfers, as its north-facing position offers excellent conditions for a wide range of water sports.

This beach is located very close to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo, making it a great option for spending the rest of the day after activities like whale watching, snorkeling, or scuba diving around the islet.
It offers excellent support facilities, including a bar, restaurant, changing rooms, and restrooms with accessibility features. This is a small urban beach with fine sand, measuring approximately 320 meters in length.

This beach is very popular among locals and is considered one of the best on the island. It stretches for about 560 meters and is set in a stunning landscape, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery.
Be cautious with the waves—there are sudden drop-offs, and the water can be dangerous. At certain times of the year, Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish may also be present. Always pay attention to the warning flags.
7. RIBEIRA QUENTE

This beach is also known as Praia do Fogo.
It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Azores. Its name comes from the fact that the water is warm, thanks to underwater hydrothermal springs in the area.
The beach has restroom facilities and a parking lot available for visitors.
