The natural swimming pools of São Miguel are true wonders of nature, offering peaceful escapes and breathtaking scenery. In this post, we’re sharing our favorite spots on the island to take a refreshing dip.
1 – Piscinas da Ribeira Grande
Ribeira Grande Pools: This is a mixed bathing area, as in addition to the three pools, it also features a beach area with natural sand. Among the pools, there is a sandy section that offers direct access to the sea, providing more variety for swimmers.
One of the pools measures 25 meters in length and 20 meters in width, while another is designed for babies (and is the only one with fresh water).
The facility also includes a playground, as well as changing rooms, restrooms, freshwater showers, and dressing areas—ensuring comfort and convenience for all visitors.
2 – Piscinas da Lagoa
The Natural Pools of Lagoa are undoubtedly one of the most popular seaside spots on the island of São Miguel. Located in the parish of Rosário, this complex offers plenty of options for those who love the ocean.
It features natural pools, a semi-Olympic artificial pool, children’s pools, and excellent support facilities, including a bar, outdoor seating area, changing rooms, restrooms, and a parking lot. It’s a destination that combines multiple leisure options with the comfort and convenience visitors look for.
3 – Piscinas das Portas do Mar – Pesqueiro
Part of the Portas do Mar Complex, these pools—known locally as “Pesqueiro”—are natural seawater pools that are popular year-round.
The area is equipped with support facilities and has lifeguard supervision throughout the year, ensuring both safety and comfort for all visitors.
4 – Piscina da Caloura
These natural pools are fed by seawater and offer an impressive sight, with strong waves that sometimes cover them completely. There are also ladders that provide direct access to the ocean in areas where the waves are calmer.
The Caloura Natural Pool is without a doubt one of the most beautiful natural pools in São Miguel. It is discreetly nestled into a steep hillside, right next to a picturesque fishing harbor.
5 – Piscinas naturais da Ferraria
The thermal springs at Ponta da Ferraria, combined with the heat from the volcanic rocks and the ocean water, create a truly unique place to relax.
The natural hot seawater pools at Ponta da Ferraria can reach temperatures above 30°C (86°F), offering a peaceful and soothing experience. However, it’s important to keep an eye on the tide conditions when visiting. High tide can lower the temperature of the thermal waters, while very low tide can make them uncomfortably hot.
