At Furnas Lake, where volcanic landscapes and lush nature create one of the most distinctive settings on São Miguel Island, a new place dedicated to Azorean food and local flavours has opened its doors.
Camélia Delicatesse opened in August 2026, right next to Furnas Lake, with a concept that celebrates local ingredients, regional flavours and the simple pleasure of taking a break during a day of exploring. The idea here is to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Whether you’re stopping for brunch, a light meal, coffee and cake, Camélia is a lovely place to take a break while exploring Furnas, São Miguel.
A Historic Building
Camélia Delicatesse occupies a historic building right beside Furnas Lake, originally built in 1937. The building has now been renovated while retaining elements that connect it to the traditional architecture of the region.
Its stone walls, wooden structure and large windows overlooking the garden create a warm and cosy atmosphere, making it a lovely place to enjoy a relaxed meal with a view of the surrounding greenery.
The result is a contemporary space that preserves the character and history of the original building while offering a comfortable setting to enjoy the food and the beautiful surroundings.
What to Eat at Camélia Delicatesse
The food at Camélia Delicatesse takes inspiration from local flavours and ingredients, giving traditional Azorean products a more contemporary presentation. The menu includes brunch options, sandwiches, savoury pastries, cakes and other choices that are perfect for a light meal.
One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into Camélia is the display of sweet and savoury treats.
In theory, it should make choosing easier.
In reality, it makes the decision even harder!
Everything looks so tempting that choosing one option inevitably means leaving another behind.
Here are some of the dishes we particularly recommend:
Morcela Puff Pastry
Morcela, or Azorean blood sausage, is one of the traditional ingredients of the Azores and a common starter on São Miguel. It is often served with pineapple, combining the rich, savoury flavour of the morcela with the sweetness and acidity of the fruit.
At Camélia, the morcela is served inside flaky pastry, creating a delicate and delicious take on this traditional ingredient.
Azorean Beef Sandwich
Azorean Beef Sandwich
This was one of our favourite options.
The meat is slow-cooked in the volcanic hot springs and served on an artisanal whole-grain Portuguese muffin (bolo lêvedo) with creamy island cheese, pickles and mustard mayonnaise. A true tribute to the land, the beef is cured and slowly cooked using the natural heat and steam of Furnas’ volcanic landscape.
It is a delicious combination of local ingredients and one of the culinary traditions that makes Furnas so unique.
Crispy Chicken Sandwich
For something a little different, try the Crispy Chicken Breast with Asian coleslaw and Fried Brie with homemade tomato and local pepper jam.
It’s a more relaxed and contemporary option, and it has already become a favourite among locals!
Fofas de Maracujá
Fofas are a traditional sweet from Furnas, similar to an éclair.
At Camélia Delicatesse, this local speciality is filled with delicious passion fruit cream. The result is a light pastry, with the fresh acidity and aroma of passion fruit balancing the sweetness of the pastry and cream.
Carrot Cake with Walnuts
The carrot cake with walnuts really deserves a special mention!
It is quite different from the carrot cakes we usually find around the island and has a lovely texture, with the walnuts adding a pleasant crunch.
Brunch at Camélia Delicatesse
Between 10 AM and 12 PM, Camélia Delicatesse also offers a dedicated brunch menu.
The options include different combinations featuring eggs, bacon, mushrooms and other ingredients, making it a good choice for a more substantial breakfast or a light meal before continuing to explore Furnas.

What to Drink
There are refreshing cocktails that pair perfectly with warmer days and the covered terrace. On the other hand, in winter, a coffee or a cappuccino is the perfect choice to enjoy with a slice of cake, or simply to take a break after exploring Furnas.
And wine, naturally, works well in any season. The menu includes a selection of regional Azorean wines, available by the glass or by the bottle.
The Atmosphere at Camélia
Beyond the food, the setting is one of the reasons why Camélia Delicatesse is worth a stop.
Inside, there is a cosy dining room with stone walls and large windows overlooking the garden.
The combination of stone, wood and natural light creates a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.
On warmer days, the covered outdoor terrace is a lovely place to enjoy the surroundings.
There is also a large garden around the building, making Camélia particularly pleasant for families with children.
And, of course, the location right next to Furnas Lake completes the experience.
Reservations
Camélia Delicatesse does not take reservations.
Guests are served on a first-come, first-served basis, so during the busiest times you may have to wait for a table. But trust us — it’s worth it!
