Forte São Brás & Museu Militar dos Açores

There are no castles in the Azores, but rather forts and fortresses, as castles are medieval structures that predate the discovery of the islands. In the city of Ponta Delgada, several forts once stood — São Pedro, Açougue, and São Cristóvão — which disappeared due to changes along the coastline. The only remaining fort is the military São Brás Fort.

This fort has a polygonal base and was designed by the Italian engineer Tomaso Benedetti. It features four bastions at the corners, built to hold artillery, and low, thick curtain walls. Over the centuries, it has been modified and expanded. Today, it houses the Azores Military Museum.

Teófilo Braga Bust – Just west of the São Brás Fort stands this beautiful bust of Teófilo Braga, a scholar, writer, and President of the Republic, born on the island of São Miguel.
