São Miguel to Santa Maria Ferry: Schedule & Prices 2026

If you’re planning to island hop in the Azores, there’s good news: passenger transport by sea between São Miguel and Santa Maria is back for the summer season. In recent years, traveling between the two islands was only possible by air.

Although many travelers search for the São Miguel to Santa Maria ferry, the service is actually operated by a cargo vessel that also carries passengers and vehicles. This seasonal connection offers an alternative to flying, especially for travelers who want to bring a car, motorcycle or other large luggage between the islands.

Yes. From July 2 to October 1, 2026, passengers can travel between Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) and Vila do Porto (Santa Maria). The service is operated by the cargo vessel Isabel C, which carries up to 16 passengers in addition to vehicles and freight.

Weather Can Affect the Schedule

As with all sea transportation in the Azores, departures are subject to weather and sea conditions. Schedule changes or cancellations may occur if conditions are not considered safe for navigation.

If you’re planning to use this service, it’s a good idea to keep some flexibility in your itinerary.

Is the Boat Better Than Flying?

For most visitors, flying remains the fastest way to reach Santa Maria, with a journey of around 30 minutes.

However, the summer passenger boat offers advantages that flights cannot:

  • Transport your own car;
  • Carry oversized luggage and equipment;
  • Lower fares for some travelers;
  • Enjoy a unique experience crossing the Atlantic between two Azorean islands.

If you’re planning a road trip across the Azores or spending several days on Santa Maria, this seasonal sea connection can be a convenient alternative.
