1. Only visiting São Miguel and skipping the other islands

There’s plenty to see and do in São Miguel — especially if you’re staying for 6 days or less. But if you have more than 7 days in the Azores, don’t miss the chance to explore at least one more island.

Pro Tip: Visit at least two Azores islands. Each island offers a completely unique vibe and natural beauty.

2. Not packing the right clothes for unpredictable weather

The Azorean weather can change quickly — sun, rain, mist, and wind, sometimes within the same hour. Many travelers arrive unprepared and end up uncomfortable.

Pro Tip: Even in summer, pack a light waterproof jacket and layers.

3. Visiting Lagoa do Fogo or Sete Cidades without checking the weather

These iconic viewpoints — and many others — are breathtaking only if the skies are clear. Fog and clouds can completely block the view.

Pro Tip: Check real-time Azores Webcams for visibility before you go.

4. Relying on public transportation

Yes, there is public transportation on the island — and you can use it. But bus routes are limited, schedules are sparse, and waiting times can be long. If you want the freedom to explore the Azores and visit hidden gems, relying only on buses is not the best option.

Pro Tip: Rent a car or book a tour (group or private). Choose a trusted company, check reviews, confirm that insurance is included, and ask about extra fees to avoid unpleasant surprises.

5. Not respecting local culture

The Azores are laid-back, but respect is important. Behaviors acceptable elsewhere may not be here.

Pro Tip: Cover up as soon as you leave the beach. Walking around town in swimwear isn’t common or acceptable. Topless sunbathing is also prohibited. Respect local customs to avoid embarrassment and to blend in with the locals.

6. Trying to see everything in 2 or 3 days

It’s tempting to do it all, but rushing through the islands means missing their true beauty. The Azores are meant to be savored slowly.

Pro Tip: If you only have 3 days in São Miguel, you can visit the main tourist spots, but you won’t have time for hiking trails or a proper beach day. It’s one or the other. For a relaxing trip — without returning home even more tired — we recommend staying for at least five to seven days.

7. Eating at overpriced tourist spots

Some restaurants in central areas, especially in Ponta Delgada, are overpriced and not always authentic. But here’s the important part: we said some, not all! There are still excellent restaurants in town that offer great value and authentic Azorean flavors.

Pro Tip: Explore beyond the busiest streets or ask locals for recommendations. You’ll often find authentic dishes at better prices.

8. Booking tours and activities at the last minute

During the summer, popular activities like whale watching, canyoning, kayaking, group hikes, and sunset tours sell out quickly.

Pro Tip: Book at least 10 days in advance to secure the best company, price, and schedule.

9. Hiking alone

Many trails in the Azores, lack guardrails or safety signage. Slippery terrain during rain makes hiking alone risky.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling solo, join a group hike — it’s safer and a great way to meet other travelers.

10. Wearing light-colored swimwear in thermal springs

The mineral-rich thermal springs — especially iron-rich ones — can permanently stain your swimwear.

Pro Tip: Avoid white or light-colored swimwear. If you’ve already packed one, rinse it immediately after your dip. And if you have blonde hair, avoid wetting it — the minerals can alter your hair color.
