Priolo: The Azores Endemic Bird

The priolo (Pyrrhula murina), today considered vulnerable, was once one of the most endangered birds in Europe. Priolo: The Azores’ Endemic Bird, is a small species found only in the archipelago. It measures about 15 to 17 cm and weighs approximately 30 grams. It is recognized by its black plumage on the head, wings, and tail, with a brownish-grey tone covering the rest of its body. Its melancholic song is a distinctive sound in the native forest.

The priolo has a deep historical connection with the Azores. In the 15th century, early settlers encountered it in abundance among the dense laurel forests. Later, it was labeled a pest due to its fondness for orange blossoms—an economically valuable crop at the time. Today, its population has stabilized at around 1,000 individuals, thanks to over a decade of conservation efforts.

At the Priolo Environmental Center, visitors can enjoy an engaging exhibition and a welcoming space with a gift shop. This inclusive venue offers activities, tours, and guided visits to support the conservation of this unique species.

Priolo Tour: Explore one of the Azores’ natural treasures with a different kind of experience! Visit the priolo’s natural habitat and learn about ongoing conservation efforts. The tour costs €35 per person and must be booked at least 2 days in advance.
