Welcome to the extraordinary world of waterfalls on the stunning island of São Miguel, a true green paradise in the heart of the Atlantic. On this volcanic island, you’ll find peaceful and lush hiking trails where beautiful waterfalls reveal themselves like hidden gems among a profusion of green shades. Some are even easily accessible by car.
Get ready to be truly enchanted by the island of São Miguel.
1 – Salto da Farinha
Salto da Farinha is a majestic waterfall standing around 40 meters high, offering a breathtaking and dramatic landscape.
Access by car can be challenging due to a steep slope. We recommend parking at the viewpoint and continuing on foot — a 2 km walk that includes the slope and a short trail to reach the waterfall. Along the way, enjoy a picnic area with stunning views of the open ocean, providing a true sense of peace and serenity.
2 – Ribeira dos Caldeirões
This is one of the most popular and admired tourist attractions in São Miguel. The Ribeira dos Caldeirões Waterfall, located within the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, is among the most visited on the island.
The park has free entry, ample parking, and easy access. Inside, you’ll find picnic areas and barbecue facilities, offering the perfect setting for a peaceful meal surrounded by nature.
3 – Cascata do Segredo
Located in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, Cascata do Segredo is a great leisure option on warm days. Car access is close, followed by a short 15-minute hike along a trail.
Though short, the trail requires caution — some parts involve walking over stones, especially slippery in rainy weather. Surrounded by dense and enchanting vegetation, this waterfall forms a beautiful natural pool at its base, ideal for a refreshing swim.
4 – Salto do Prego
This is the least accessible waterfall on the list and can only be reached via the Sanguinho Trail, one of the most well-known hikes on the island, located in the municipality of Povoação.
Along the way, you’ll come across steps, bridges, small streams, and rich, diverse flora. The trail is 4.5 km long and of medium difficulty. The waterfall itself is hidden deep within a lush forest and features a dreamy lagoon.
5 – Salto do Cabrito
Salto do Cabrito is one of the most beautiful and well-known waterfalls on São Miguel Island. With a 35-meter drop, it forms a lovely swimming area that’s especially popular in summer.
Located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, it can be reached on foot or by car — though caution is advised due to the steep descent/ascent. A 4×4 vehicle makes the journey easier.
You can simply admire the waterfall or take on the Salto do Cabrito Trail, which starts here. The hike immerses you in the wild green nature of São Miguel’s interior, with a duration of around three hours and medium difficulty.
