Pico Climbing

This is one of the most iconic and remarkable experiences in the Azores, perfect for those who are in good physical condition, even without any previous mountaineering experience.

The official trail is approximately 8 km long and follows volcanic rock terrain with an average incline of 30%, making it a challenging but rewarding ascent.

Finally, the incredible feeling of reaching the highest point in Portugal. At the summit, you will have time to breathe, relax, and enjoy the moment, whether admiring the views, resting, or taking photos.

On clear days, it is possible to see up to five islands of the Central Azores group: Faial, São Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira, and of course, Pico Island.

3 Tour Options – Day, Sunrise & Overnight Climbs

This hike is suitable for participants in good physical condition. It involves challenging terrain and requires moderate to high fitness levels. No mountaineering experience is needed, but it is a strenuous climb.

Choose one of the options below:

Pico Mountain Climb – Sunrise

The ascent begins in the early hours of the morning, guided by headlamps under the stars. You will reach the summit in time to witness sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Headlamps and hiking poles included. Start: between 00:00 and 3:00 in the morning Average duration: 10 hours. Price: €109 per person.

Pico Mountain Climb – Overnight in the Crater

The most adventurous option, designed for participants in excellent physical condition. You will reach the summit and spend an unforgettable night inside the volcanic crater. Only 32 people can camp in the crater, to guarantee availability, book in advance. Included: 2 person tents, single sleeping bags, mattress, headlamps and hiking poles. Higher difficulty, necessary to carry camping equipment. Start: 3pm. Arrival: 11am the next day. Price: €185 per person.

Pico Mountain Climb – Daytime

With the first light of day, we head towards the summit known as “Piquinho”, with time to enjoy panoramic views that only a volcano in the middle of the Atlantic can offer. Walking poles included. Start:between 6am and 8am. Average duration: 7 hours. Price: €79 per person.

Who Can Participate?

Prepare your body and mind.

Climbing Mount Pico is recommended only for people with an active lifestyle who regularly engage in physical activity. The physical and mental preparation required to reach the summit can be achieved with a few months of training and dedication.

For less active participants, we strongly recommend training for 3 to 4 months before attempting the climb.

Private climbs are often the best option for those who are unsure about reaching the summit or who prefer a more flexible pace. Always respect your body and the group’s pace.

Who Cannot Participate?

Not suitable for people with limited mobility, back or heart conditions, or pregnant travelers.

What to Bring

Weather conditions on Mount Pico are highly changeable, and the trail is long. You should be prepared for heat, sun exposure, wind, cold, and rain regardless of the season.

  • Sturdy hiking boots or trekking shoes with good grip (mandatory for safety)
  • Windproof and waterproof jacket
  • Warm layers depending on weather conditions
  • Hat and sunscreen (especially on sunny days)
  • Backpack with snacks and at least 2L of water per person
  • Personal identification (required at entry)

 

In case of unstable weather, bring waterproof trousers and a rain cover for your backpack. We also recommend an extra set of clothes and dry socks to change after the hike.

What Not to Wear
  • Jeans or cotton clothing
  • Tight or restrictive clothing
  • Open skin exposure
  • Brand new hiking boots (risk of injury)
  • Running shoes or non-hiking footwear
