Just a few miles off the coast of Pico Island, the ocean floor drops dramatically to depths of over 3,000 meters in the Atlantic Ocean. These conditions are highly favorable for cetaceans, which can often be spotted very close to the island.
Other features, such as hydrothermal vents and underwater seamounts, create the perfect environment for whales and dolphins.
In fact, Pico Island is considered one of the best places in the world for whale watching in the Azores. More than 20 species of cetaceans—both resident and migratory—can be spotted in this region.
