The Janela do Inferno trail is located in the southern part of São Miguel Island. Get ready to dive into a true fairy tale and an enchanted forest!
This walk will offer you a journey full of surprises, with unique elements of nature, from the local fauna and flora to the iconic happy cows of our archipelago.
At the end of the trail, get ready to discover one of São Miguel’s thermal paradises: Caldeira Velha, where you can enjoy a relaxing bath in the thermal pools.

The trail takes approximately 2.5 hours and covers a total distance of 7.5 km.

Who can participate?
- This activity is not recommended for individuals with severe back, knee, or ankle problems. Please inform us of any previous injuries, medical conditions, or health issues at the time of booking.
- It is recommended to be in good physical condition as this tour sometimes involves walking on unstable terrain, muddy areas, and slopes with gravel and inclines.
- This route is not recommended for people with claustrophobia due to the passage through long dark tunnels.
- Children are the responsibility of an adult.
What to bring?
- Identification document, such as an ID or passport.
- Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing.
- Hiking shoes or boots.
- Individual water bottle.
- Small backpack: to carry your belongings.
- Swimsuit and towel (preferably in dark colors).
- It is important to wear appropriate footwear as you will encounter some descents and muddy areas along the trail.
- It is recommended to bring a flashlight, as the tunnels are dark and long. This route is not advisable for people with claustrophobia due to this factor.

Itinerário:
During the walk, you will cross several pastures, bridges, and a total of four tunnels located deep within the forest, originally built as part of old aqueducts for collecting water for the population and industries.
Along the route, be sure to take photos, as you will be surrounded by lush vegetation, as well as small valleys crossed by streams that enhance the trail. In the end, you will be rewarded with the magnificent waterfall formed by water erosion, a true natural spectacle.
In the second part of this activity, you will visit Caldeira Velha (ticket not included). Take the opportunity to enjoy the thermal pools or, if you prefer, relax under the waterfall with a natural massage and make sure to capture the moment with an unforgettable photograph.
Additional Information:
- The tour may be postponed or canceled due to weather conditions or if the minimum number of participants is not met to start the excursion. The customer will have the option to accept the change or cancel the booking and receive a full refund of all paid amounts.
- Cancellation policy: Cancellations up to 72 hours before the start of the activity: full refund of the booking value. Seven days if it is a private group.
- Entrance tickets to the thermal pools are not included in the activity price, nor anything beyond what is mentioned here.
